i bought an sr500 for xmas from a kid for $300. he wanted
$800, but no lights, battery, bad tires. the usual. but it
was dead stock, clean and had 3k miles. a just broken in
bike.
apparently the kid had enemies or was an asshole. i started
it once, saw oil out the breather and started pulling all
the filters and draining fluids.
it has a filter in the frame downtube, the sr being an oif
dry sumper. when i pulled that filter out, along came a
pound of sand. a little worried, i pulled the oil and sump
filters....clean.
so after a flush, spray, flush marathon, every oil passage
is squeaky clean. put in new oil and filter, went 10 miles
and drained and pulled. clean. new oil, new filter and it
runs like a rocket.
moral of the story, buy it used, check it completely.
