i have an oppotunity to buy a virago 750 1996 for my first road bike.
Will this bike handle my 240lbs, 6'3" frame, and have enough power to handle
myself plus a gal pal?
i am not looking for a big bore bike, i'm just a beginner to this road bike
thing and don't want to invest too much cash up front.
I do have lots of dirt bike experience. My friends are trying to get me to
buy a harley, but i'm not willing to part with 10k+ for a new hobby..yet.
So please tell me all there is to know about the virago 750.
Thanks to all!

I owned a '95 virago 750.. I'm 250 pounds, wife is lighter, but not
small. I'm 5'10".. great starter bike, might actually be a bit much,
but it handles so incredibly well, I think it would work for anyone.
you may feel it's a little small, but as a starter bike it would be
great... As far as power goes, it's got all that you need, I could
pass 2 cars and a truck on a side road with the wife on the back and not
feel like I wasn't gonna make it.. You do have to take the RPM's up to
get to that power, but because it has a tach you know where the red line
is and can take it to it... you will feel like your reving the engine to
much at higher speeds, but because it's half cruizer, with a performance
engine, you need the higher rpms, I'd simply think twice the rpms my car
makes, so if I think 2500 is ok for my car, a comparable speed on the
bike would be 5000 rpms.
There is a huge amount of info out there for working on the virago, and
it's easy to fix, not that it has any problems, they go and go and go.
I did some basic customizing on my virago, drag pipes (beautiful sound -
very loud), disable the ais system, removed the "bug eye" pods, added an
aftermarket air cleaner, jetted the carbs (needed with the air cleaner,
and pipes) after that the bike had way more speed and power than I
needed, that little 750 would out run my buddy's 1400 intruder also
piped and jetted.... with the wife on the back it would lift the front
tire in 3rd gear if I tried....
it was also great for long distance runs (but you do need to get rid of
the stock seat - horrible torture device) mustang makes a great seat for
it... expensive but worth it. we drove that virago from mid ohio to New
York City with out a problem... screaming at 85 - 90 mph the whole way
not a hic-up out of her.
almost 2 months ago I traded her in on a Yamy roadstar... 1700 cc's
shield, hard packs, very nice, hated to see her go - the roadstar is
slower, but handles better on the long hauls which I really enjoy.
if you have any questions, e-mail me, Closed@neo.rr.com I'd be glad to
answer.... ~Dave

I'm 5ft 10 and 260, and I like my Virago alot...except for the location of
the foot pegs. I feel like I'm sitting right over the top of them. forward
pegs for these bikes are quite expensive. If your lady is tall too, you
might want a larger Framed bike, V-star or Vulcan.
