Any small virago owners out there? ( the bike, not the owner).

I have read all the sites I can find concerning Viragos but have never found
any mention of the size of the inlet to the air box.

It appears to me that the volume of air that can be pulled  through the
intake is far less than the size of the carbs. This would seem to be the
first stop in any tuning regime.  Am I missing something?

in theory, no. k&n makes great filters for extra hp. there
may ne a kit for your bike.
there is a replacement kit for my sr500's. toss the old
airbox, bolt it on and whoa-la, 5hp. dump the skinny header
and add a megaphone and 5 more. adding 10 hp to a 500cc bike
for under $300 is about the best bang for the buck......but
the sr is even more moddable. a 545cc 10 to 1 piston adds
almost 10 more. on a bike that started with 28-33 hp, it's a
kick!
your virago is almost as easy......check the yahoo virago
groups for more grunt.
i have a full blown hot rod sr that has every mod you can
use and still keep the kick starter. it runs on 91 octane
and has been dynoed at 51 hp. for a bike that weighs 320
lbs, it's a screamer. the only thing it needs is a 6th gear
for hiway haulass.

I can only speak for the 750 virago... but it uses the frame as the air
box.  The air cleaner follows a tube to the frame, but the belief from
other virago owners is that the air cleaner limits air flow and that the
box (frame) is more the enough... I took mine, kept the stock intake and
added on a harley "dragton" air cleaner (foam) I removed the pods on
both sides and man did she scream...

My 'little one'(400, same as 535 mostly) has what are referred to as
Techglide (chrome 'blobs') intakes over the rocker cover, then a narrow
'tube' that squeezes between the tank and the frame and feeds into the
expanded frame where the fuel tank would be on a traditional bike. There is
plenty of everywhere except where it passes from the 'chrome bit' behind the
tank and up to the filter housing. I was wondering if anyone had tried
bypassing or just plain leaving off this narrow pipe.
